The Northwest Indians were surrounded by many types of animals. These animals came from the forests, the mountians, and the ocean. These animals symbolized, or represnted many ideas in their culture. Below are a list of animals that the Northwest Indians found important in their lives and are heard throughout many of their stories.
BEAR: The bear symbolized strength.
BEAVER: The beaver was seen as a hard worker and a teacher. The beaver was always prepared for survival and legends often depict the beaver as wise and helpful.
BUMBLE BEE: The bee represents honesty and good thinking. The bumble bee is a hard worker.
DOGFISH SHARK: The dogfish shark is a very warlike and fearsome animal. It is seen for its strength.
DOVE: This bird symbolizes love and kindness.
EAGLE: The eagle represents great strength and power. It is also very smart.
HAWK: The hawk is known for its great eyesight and good hunting skills. The Native Americans watched this hunter with respect, for they wished that they could hunt as well as the hawk.
KILLERWHALE: The whale is seen as a symbol of good luck.
OTTER: The otter symbolizes friendship. It enjoys both work and play.
SALMON: This fish is seen as a provider of life because it feeds so many of the Indians every year.
WOLF: The wolf is seen as strong. The
wolf also symbolizes the family.
