The Activities | Observing Activities

Introduction

The following activities are included to provide an understanding of how does one know that something stated in a book is in fact true.  As you build your VR worlds you will discover that you need certain types of information, for example exactly how big is the Sun?

The following activities will prove useful in determining some necessary information that will be needed as you build your solar system, particularly the Earth, Sun, Moon project.  The procedures that are discussed are only suggestions and if your team develops a clever way to measure something please feel free to do so and incorporate your measurement in your solar system model.

These activities also provide a more defensible foundation upon which to build your solar system.  For example, would you say to a colleague that you just used a number from a book without thinking about it?  Probably not.  When the time comes to write your papers concerning your projects you will need to provide justification for what you did and these activities will prove useful.

The Activities

Currently their are four recommended activities though each team should design and develop one or two observational activities.  Before an observing activity is done a brief written summary - via e-mail or on paper, should be submitted to either Mike Barnett for approval.

The summary should include:

What you are trying to observe?
How will your results affect or be incorporated into your model?
Responsibilities for each team member.

Each team is responsible for designing and developing at least one observing activity for
Project 1 and Project 2.  Good places to refer to are the following:
