I first meet Joe at the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) conference in 1999. At that conference I requested that Joe be my national mentor for a Spencer fellowship for which I was applying. Shortly thereafter I received the fellowship and Joe agreed to be my mentor. Since that time we have had meetings at both AERA and NARST to discuss my progress as a scholar. Joe is a distinguished professor in the field of education and has been president of NARST and so can speak directly to my potential to be a scholar in the field of science education and technology.
