CHALLENGE!!!

Look closely at the pictures of Devil’s Tower. Do you see the long column like formations? This has been explained in a legend. According to legend a very large, long tailed, and long eared bear clawed the sides trying to attack a small band of warriors. He never reached them because the young warriors drove him off by cutting off his tail and a large part of his ears. This legend explains the shape of Devil’s Tower and why bears do not have very big ears and very small tails. Find something in your school yard or classroom and create an exciting legend to explain its shape, color, or a unique feature. I’ll be interested to hear what you come up with. Note we have a written out lesson on this challenge (click here to see this lesson).

Research other legends. Don’t just look in books about Native Americans, all cultures and countries have legends!!! Pick one that really interests you and write a paragraph or so about why it interests you. Compare your legends…I’ll bet some….even if they are from very different cultures are similar.
