Justin's Journal Entry for November 18, 1998

devils2.jpg (51055 bytes)On the way I met Deborah, a park ranger at Devils Tower National Monument.   She had a lot to say.

Hi kids, how lucky you are to learn about such neat places in our country. My name is Deborah, I am a Interpretive Ranger,
here at Devils Tower National Monument. I do many interesting things during our peak season, which are the summer months. Some activities include rock climbing demonstrations, guided tower trail walks, flagpole talks, and campfire programs in our campground. When I give my rock climbing demo, I identify climbing gear, show how it is used and talk about interesting facts related to Devils Tower. Here's something you might not have know, the fastest climb to the top of Devils Tower was done in 18 minutes up and 11 minutes to down, by Tod Skinner. While on my guided tower trail walk around the tower, me and my visitors go on a scavenger hunt and find all kinds of neat things like lichen. Does anybody know what lichen is? It is algae growing all over Devils Tower! During my flagpole talks, I like to compare prairie dogs to humans. Did you know that prairie dogs have a restroom, living room, and sleeping room in their underground
houses?
My campfire program is really exciting too, me and the visitors
play Rock Jeopardy. Everyone walks away learning something knew about geology, rock climbing, and fun facts about our sacred rock, Devils Tower! I hope you get to visit Devils Tower one day and maybe even become a Interpretive Ranger at our nations first national
monument. You are the future of the National Park Service!

Have Fun, Deborah
