Today was a very exciting day to be on the roads of Idaho and Oregon! After a
night of camping in a spot just over Lolo Pass in north central Idaho, Greg and I had an
exciting drive that included a back road in the Nez Pierce Reservation, (This spot placed
us above the clouds)a scenic but bumpy route along the Columbia River Gorge, and a trip to
Multnomah Falls. We finally arrived in Portland, Oregon around 7:30 Indiana time. (In case
your wondering, we didnt camp out in Portland
we are staying with my very cool
and wonderful Aunt Pat.
The Nez Pierce Reservation was a really strange experience. Knowing we were on the exact
same land, as the direct descendants of Chief Joseph made us think about life in this area
when Chief Joseph lead his people. As we drove up into the mountains we passed through a
layer of what we thought was fog. Once we got a little higher, we realized that we had
really passed through a layer of clouds. The picture of Greg driving (How about
those wacky sideburns?}was taken around 1:00pm. Can you see how dark and fuzzy it
looked outside? If you look really close, you can see water droplets on the windshield.
What is the difference between a cloud and fog?
Multnomah Falls was remarkable! I think the pictures pretty much say it all.
We read about the LEGEND of Multnomah Falls. Apparently, Oregon suffered from a horrible
drought a long, long time ago. A tribal Chief determined that a sacrifice must be made. A
young beautiful maiden was chosen and thrown off the top of the waterfall. If you look
closely you can see a vision of the maidens face as the water bounces of the rocks.
Can you see anything in these pictures? I can.
Near the top of the falls, we looked out over the Columbia River Gorge and wondered where
we would find the beginning of this awesome river. We are going to look for it tomorrow,
any suggestions of what town we should go to first? |
