Justin's Journal Entry for November 20, 1998
Today’s journey took us to the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, Astoria, Oregon. We also made a trek to Cannon Beach and saw "Haystack Rock". Waves on the Pacific Ocean were over eight feet high, so kayaking was out of the question but we didn’t let that stop a good time. We ran along the beach, danced into the ocean with all our cloths on and watched the tide come in. Yes, it was pretty cold but it was so beautiful that we forgot about being uncomfortable.

We saw a lot of Seagulls and Rock Doves, however the weather kept most of the animals hunkered down. I wish Riley could have been there with us. She would have loved it!

It was really cool to watch the tide come in. It is hard to believe that water can be so powerful. All along the coast, we could see signs of large waves and substantial erosion. The waves rolled in and scooped up huge pieces of drift wood, rock and sand. Most of the rocks had been pushed and pulled by the tides so much that they were as smooth and shiny as a bowling ball. We even found a piece of wood that was worn into an egg shaped formation. I wanted to take a rock or two and that piece of wood to show you but I thought it would be better to leave it so the next people to visit the beach could find them. I did get a couple of good pictures for you though.
