-- scientist's apprentice camp

In this research study, I and my colleagues examined data on 24 middle school students who embarked on two-week long apprenticeships with "real" scientists engaged in "real" research. By collecting data at random times using beeper technology, videotapes, audiotapes, and a type of electronic performance support systems, we gained a rich understanding of apprenticeship learning as it unfolded in situ. We used actor-network methodology, along with multi-dimensional scaling and small-space analysis to understand both the products and processes of the apprenticeship journey; the journey that took them from outside of the scientist's community of practice to meaningful participation and appropriation of those practices that were central to the community.
