P251/M201 Grading Criteria

General grading criteria for written assignments:    Percent of Grade

1. Ideas (richness of information, elaboration, originality, interesting)       20%
2. Coherence (clarity, unity, organization, transitions, style)               10%
3. Mechanics (spelling, format, punctuation, grammar)                     10%
4. Linkage (relevant to class, shows evidence of learning in course or in field) 20%
5. Reflection (thoughtful, thought provoking, how this personally affects you)  20%
6. Completeness (adequate info presented, fulfilled spirit of assignment, depth) 20%

Please note: The coherence and mechanics make up a smaller portion of your grade because I expect everyone to be at the college level in these areas. However, if you have difficulties in using correct grammar or writing coherently, this could also affect other aspects of your grade, such as idea development and completeness of the paper.  If you feel that you have difficulties in writing, please work with the Writing Tutorial Services here on campus. Their WWW site is located at http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/wts/home.html.

If you have any questions about these criteria, the assignment, or anything else, please contact me at sbarab@indiana.edu.
