This course is intended to establish an environment in which prospective teachers:
develop proficiency in computer applications and classroom software as
it relates to being an effective classroom educator; and
adopt a critical eye and ethical code regarding the role of technology
for preparing their students to be successful in the 21st century.

Guiding Framework

This course acknowledges that teaching and learning are, and always have been, an integral aspect of human interaction. All people teach, all people learn. Individually and in collaborative groups, learners will investigate the use of technology through lectures, readings, discussions, research, team projects and other activities.

Further, it is my goal that this course is perceived as an opportunity for exploration and discovery, not test anxiety. As such, there will be no midterm or final (however, there will be one quiz but it will only constitute 5% of your grade). Instead, you will be held accountable for the development of multiple projects and for the maintenance of a portfolio that documents your work (see more below).

Course Goals

There are five core goals of the course. The first four, comprising essential knowledge and "mindsets," are always interwoven with the fifth, practice-oriented, goal:

Attitudes and Perspectives

Promote "fearlessness" and a sense of "learning to learn"- the belief that students can learn computer applications and their uses with enthusiasm and without anxiety;

Ethics

Develop information about and commitment to act on principles of responsible technology use in education, including areas of classroom gender equity, privacy, censorship, copyright, and school acceptable use policies;

Appropriate Use

Develop good judgment about the use of technology in the classroom, a critical eye for hyperbole, and practice in adapting specific ideas to one's own curriculum and instruction;

Professionalism

Promote students' creating developing an image of themselves as teachers, especially how they can use computers to make teaching and learning more productive for themselves as professionals and their students. Assist in creating a framework for continual professional development; and

Practices

Insure students are proficient in using a number of computer applications that are relevant for educational professionals. Specifically, to be proficient in carrying out 12 tasks:
