W310:  Evidence of Technology's Effectiveness?

Recently there have been some nationwide studies examing the relationship between educational technology and student achievement in mathematics.  These studies represent the first large scale examinations of how computers affect learning of mathematics in America's classrooms.  What is exciting about these studies is they examine a broad cross section of schools (ie. schools with varying socioeconomic status and varying ethnicities) and that they control for many potential confounding variables such as family income, class size and teacher qualifications.

In spite of the potential of this study to put forth some definitive findings interpretations of the results have not been so clear cut. In today's class your goal is to read the following article in the Washington Post  and post a comment that is supported by the author's claims.  In other words, make the case that technology is detrimental for mathematical achievement.

After your posting your response, read the article that describes the original study.   Then respond to your classmates postings who took an opposing point of view.

Also feel free to read the opposing article as well as the original study document at ETS.
