Course Rationale
With the goal of situating the learning experience and strengthening university
and K-12 partnerships, we have developed a revised course to prepare pre-service
teachers in using Technology in the classroom. We expect this collaboration
will provide you with an opportunity to engage in project-based learning
that is authentic in that it situates your learning experiences in a real
classroom and around projects that will aid you in developing your teaching-with-technology
skills. Further, it moves us towards our goal of making university
courses realistic and eliminates the division between learning abstract
concepts and decontextualized skills at the university and actually applying
them in authentic settings. In addition, the activities of this course
will help you to develop a teaching portfolio that provides you with a
record of your activities and documents your strengths and capabilities
to future employers.
Course Description
During the semester, we will meet to discuss research, to design and implement
lessons, and to reflect on the integration of technology in the classroom.
These activities will be situated around teaching lessons in a K-12 classroom,
readings and discussions of scholarly research, attending a professional
development conference, the development of a school/district Website, and
the development of strategies to address problems frequently identified
by classroom teachers. You will be expected to document your
course activities through the creation of a teacher resource
kit and a teaching
portfolio, which will serve as the midterm and final assessments.
Below, we provide brief descriptions of each of these expectations and
include links to more in-depth documentation.
Adopt-A-Teacher
(40 pts). Learning how to use technology is one issue,
however, integrating what you've learned into the curriculum is another
issue. The Adopt-A-Teacher component of W310 will provide you with opportunities
to apply your practical technology knowledge to help teachers organize
and integrate technology into their classroom instruction. Each one of
you will sign up for your placement at Binford. See List
of Adopt-a-Teachers to see available teaching times.
Stellar
School District (30 pts). The Stellar
School District is a simulation requiring you to work in teams to develop
virtual schools. Engaging in this simulation will allow you to improve
website development skills, your ability to support other teachers in integrating
technology, and your continuing development as an educator who integrates
technology into the curriculum.
Portfolio
of Work (20 pts.). This assignment
will allow you to initiate the process of building a portfolio, which you
can use to secure your first teaching job. In addition, once you
get your job you will have two years to build a portfolio representative
of your qualifications to be used in securing your Indiana Teaching Certification.
