Software Evaluations
THE WILD WEST

This software has been adapted from the epic television mini-series of 1992 and is packed with thousands of historic photographs, videos, art works, and songs.  It deals with people, places, and events that shaped the American west from 1866 to 1896 that included the cowboys, settlers, gunfighters, Native Americans, and others.  A script of each area within the software could be used to teach lessons and can be printed from the print menu.  At a later time, the students have the opportunity to view the CD video.  This software involves more video and very little student interaction.  Wild West is probably designed more for the upper elementary level, 5th/6th grade or higher.

 THE INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD

The Indian In The Cupboard is an interactive, hands-on, CD-ROM that provides children, ages five to nine, with eight different activities.  The activities focus on the Iroquois history and tradition.  These activities involve using skills such as logic, listening, problem-solving and memory.  Some of the activities include identifying different animal tracks in a variety of environments, hunting for feathers in order to create an Indian Headdress, and participating in a traditional Iroquois ceremony.  Children are guided through the program by their own selection of characters and each character has its own story to tell.
Some of the activities have more than one level, but all of them include gentle testing at their completion in order to quiz children’s learning.  After each activity is successfully completed, children receive symbols to put toward the creation of a Wampum Belt.
This program, in addition to providing a variety of learning opportunities and enjoyable experiences, also has striking graphics and musical accompaniment.
Some trouble children might encounter with this program include, somewhat difficult mouse manipulation, as well as long and drawn-out introductions and explanations at the beginning of each activity.
Despite the minimal draw-backs that come along with this program, I feel that it would be an extremely worthwhile purchase for any classroom.
